Don't bother

by rwarren at Citysearch

Just moved here from the West Coast. Tried Red Dragon based on "Top 10" recommendation here. Another mistake under the Reader's Top 10. Bland seasoning, skimped on chicken content of entree, and very greasy egg rolls. Never again...........

Local Hotspot!

by Kevin Coats at Citysearch

Red Dragon has been a local neighborhood chinese restaurant favorite since the late 1980s. The location in the heart of Five Points, and near Cameron Village, sets the stage for a wonderful experience. Michael, one of the owner, is usually on site and working hard to make your experience wonderful! The food is incredibly good! The service is friendly and attentive and the portions are large enough to take leftovers! If you've never been, you should go find out what the Hayes Barton crowd considers their dinner spot for Chinese food. Published by Kevin Coats Raleigh NC

Top Tier for 20 years!

by youarelame at Citysearch

I have been a patron of Red Dragon for going on twenty years. I have never had a bad experience and the food has always been delicious. The ownership has never been anything but nice and the wait staff is always on their game. Keep up the good work!

  • Pros: always friendly, always good.
  • Cons: none- Red Dragon rocks

BEST CHINESE IN RALEIGH

by mkathrynp at Citysearch

As soon as you walk in to the restaurant you get a friendly greeting. The one downside of the hidden jewel is the small dining room. The food is fabulous...Hot and Sour soup is the best there, but you can't go wrong with any of the entrees. The parking lot is also sometimes really hard to park in, but I am a really bad driver. GO EAT HERE YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!

  • Pros: Excellent food, friendly/fast service
  • Cons: More expensive than the average Chinese place, Small dining room--sometimes there's a wait

Intimate atmosphere

by onediner at Citysearch

My husband and I have been going to Red Dragon for at least 8 years and have always loved it. The food is good Americanized Chinese. If you're looking for authentic style, this isn't it. We love that it's small and quiet. We have always had polite and fast service. Over the years, the portions seem to have gotten a little smaller. We used to always have enough leftovers for lunch, but now we finish our food or have just a small bit left, unless we have big appetizers.

I agree that it is not really suited for children, unless they are the type who stay seated quietly at the table for the duration of a meal. The small size makes noisy people of any age a nuisance to the other patrons.

  • Pros: Good food, quiet and intimate
  • Cons: Hard to find, limited seating and parking

Great service

by doberstein at Citysearch

First time going to Red Dragon, we will go back. The food was very well prepared. I had chicken with broccoli. I asked for it spicy, our waiter took the time to explain the two sauces that have that would be spicy. I went with his recommendation, spicy brown sauce. Great time! Place is small, you may have a wait.

Good Raleigh Chinese

by 21ja at Citysearch

I went to this place and had the tofu vegetable dish-- best I have had in Raleigh. The veggies were fresh and the brown sauce was flavorful, the spring roll was good, but the wonton soup was a little on the bland side, but still flavorful, especially after adding a bit of soy sauce. The drawback is that the menu does not have a wide variety or staples I expect at a Chinese place (like Spare Ribs, egg rolls, or noodles other than lo mein) & if you go at night it is incredibly difficult to find because the awning isn't lit. The owner said they have been there 15 years so people just know where they are. I highly recommend it.

...And I'm sorry but I can't resist-- to the woman who thinks the staff was rude for shushing your kids (and those like you)-- I applaud them! Nobody wants to hear your loud and obnoxious kids-- yes I'm sure it was disturbing to others trying to enjoy their meals around you (thereby obnoxious) which caused the staff to shush YOUR kids-- a job YOU should have been taking care of yourself. If you want your kids to behave loudly or run around a restaurant like it's a playground, go to chucky cheese, otherwise be considerate to those around you and keep your kids disciplined in public.

  • Pros: Great Raleigh Chinese Take-Out
  • Cons: Small Menu

Bland "Americanized" fast-food Chinese food

by shadesofblonde at Citysearch

I've been to The Red Dragon twice; the first time it was not at all good...the second time, my friends and I went because we were hoping that I'd been wrong the first time. Unfortunately, I wasn't. The staff was polite but not friendly; they only came to the table to take our orders, bring the food, and to leave the check. We were never asked how the food was, either time. The Peking Duck was extremely fatty and not crispy. Yes, I know that Duck is not a lean meat, but this was 90% jiggly, inedible fat! The Chicken Broccoli, as well, was not lean; it tasted like it had been reheated and the broccoli was soggy and overcooked. The Beef Broccoli was similar; even doctored-up with a lot of soy sauce and hot sauce, it didn't have good flavor or texture. I requested "extra mushrooms" with the Beef Broccoli and was charged $2 extra for them, but they were very hard to locate on the platter; they also tasted and looked like canned mushrooms. The white rice was very good. Really, the food did not taste good and its' appearance was not attractive, in the least.

The prices weren't too high but I would've been much happier with a higher bill, as long as the food was good. So, in summary, the prices are low (and you get what you pay for..) and smoking wasn't allowed (a good thing).

  • Pros: location, no-smoking
  • Cons: parking, service, food

Good food and friendly staff

by halladay38 at Citysearch

The only drawback to this place is that it is too small to hold the crowds it sometimes generates. The reason it gets crowded is because the food is very good. Since 2001, I've probably eaten at Red Dragon at least 30 times. The soup is delicious and the sweet and sour chicken is hard to beat. They give you a generous amount of nearly everything.

  • Pros: very good taste, generous portions, value priced at lunchtime
  • Cons: parking lot and restaurant itself is too small

Consistent quality, light and fresh, inexpensive

by lucymirie at Citysearch

Red Dragon consistently serves fresh and light entrees of just right portion sizes. The service is always efficient and friendly. However, if you like spicy food as I do, ask for hot sauce on the side. If you ask for the dish to be prepared extra spicy, even for the dishes with the little pepper by them on the menu, you will still be disappointed. The efficient service, the consistent freshness and quality, however, make it worth revisiting. Just be prepared to add your own heat.

  • Pros: Consistent quality, fresh and light
  • Cons: not nearly spicy enough
