Bad service, good service reserved only for upper crust

by Isabella Riehn

Upon hearing about the selection of books from some reviewers, I brought my parents who were visiting from Singapore, only to have them accused by a female store staff of mis-positioning their books (in fact it was someone else before us who had misplaced the books), and by another male staff at checkout who couldn't wait to shoo them off after they have paid for 5 books. I feel certain after these 2 incidents that they serve a certain clientele of Caucasian appearance only. It was a sad day for us as my parents were seriously looking to buy books for their grandchild, only to be treated so shabbily.

  • Pros: Wide Selection of books
  • Cons: Shabby treatment for non-caucasians

Always worth the drive!

by candybuttons

I live in Durham, but I find myself in Quail Ridge on a very regular basis. They are always having some great readings/signings by my favorite authors, and they always do a fantastic job of being organized and efficient while also being homey and inviting. I also signed up for the email newsletter, and I enjoy Nancy's comments on what she's reading. I find out about a lot of wonderful books that way!

My parents also love Quail Ridge... They drive 2 hours from South Carolina for many of the events, and because my dad is an educator, he gets a free membership in their discount club. It's a great value for them, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I would recommend this store to anyone!

  • Pros: Staff, Selection, Atmosphere
  • Cons: It's in Raleigh. :(

Quail Ridge Books has quietly become the Triangle's premier independent bookseller.

by Contributor

In Short
The store is large but cozy, and the pace is gentler than you'll find at the big chains. Look for the fireplace beneath the painting of Reynolds Price. There's a vast array of fiction and biographies, with an emphasis on local and regional writers. Mysteries, books on film, history, gay and lesbian titles are also well-stocked. The booksellers are friendly and helpful. And there's a former reference librarian on call to answer difficult book-related questions.

The best bookstore!

by rachelstar

I have been a customer since the early days at Quail Corners Shopping Center. The service has always been the best...you can go in with partial title, only the author's first name or a vague description of the book---and they can still "name that book". With discounts for the readers club, and regular sales for the members--prices are great. Nancy has created a book lovers heaven!

Wealthy need only enter

by dwango77

Perfect for the trendy sweater and loafer Izod crowd, everyone else should just move on. Great atmosphere, but be prepared to pay much higer prices than just about any place else in the area. You're probably paying for the ambience and snob appeal. Not worth it.

  • Pros: Selection, Class, Atmosphere
  • Cons: , Snobby customers, Prices

Two Words: Customer Service

by rlb54321

Customer service is the reason why I buy all my books at Quail Ridge. I've sent numerous emails with requests and always gotten a quick reply. The staff will also research items if you don't have all the information. Just send an email with a description and they'll do the rest, and hold the book for you. Plus, as an independent store you are helping the local economy and not some big corporation headquartered in California.

From the many author readings to the frequent buyers' discount program, what's not to like about one of the Southeast's best bookstores. Why can't more cities have a place like Quail Ridge Books?
