This place is awesome
by dvspindler
The staff is really friendly, the food is great, and the prices are totally reasonable. Also, they have TONS of beer on tap. The tavern looks small when you first walk in, but it's actually pretty big. The feel of the place is classically tavern-ish, from creeky wood floors to dim lighting. Also, they don't play loud music, which is nice because you can actually go there to chat with your compatriots. The food is always fresh and they have an interesting menu with Greek and American classics, like grape leaves or a turkey Reuben. Awesome place. Check it out.
- Pros: Yummy food, good prices, friendly staff, cool ambiance
- Cons: Sometimes so crowded that you can't get a table
Atmosphere, service, quality, consistency
by FoodLoveratState
Mitch's Tavern has a fantastic menu (diverse and healthy). The atmosphere is terrific, the waiters are friendly and speedy. The food is great quality and is consistently good.
- Pros: It never lets down
- Cons: haven't found any
Owner only money driven
by teach4nc
Yes, the place has a history. But I've known two people to work there...and the owner is only concerned about how much money goes into his pockets. This bar could be awesome if he made little changes. Check out the state of the carpet--a total safety hazard but he's uninterested in making the atmosphere more safe because of the money it would take. Also, have you ever seen the sanitation grade? So...drinks are fine, but I wouldn't eat there if I were you!! Also, it's non-smoking now last I heard.
A great college (and beyond) bar
by mdaven517
My friends and I are regulars at Mitch's, and have been since our sophomore year at NC State. It's the only bar worth going to on Hillsborough Street thanks to the great liquor (Cape Cods, Whiskey sours, and vodka tonics, usually for $2.50) and beer specials (every night, not just on weekdays). The atmosphere is laid-back, the bartenders are friendly, and if you ask nicely, they'll usually let you change the channel on one of the bar's several flat-screens.
The food is good, and usually pretty quick. Standard bar fare (chips & salsa, chili, etc.) with some sandwiches, soups, and pasta dishes thrown in, all for a pretty decent price. Go in with $20, and you've got dinner, two drinks, and tip covered.
Getting a table anytime during an NC State football/basketball game is almost impossible, so get there early, park yourselves in one of the booths or old church pews, and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Not Child Friendly
by pcollinsh
We love the place. I've been there many times over the past 30 years. Today, we came an hour away to visit our daughter, and it has everything we love, good beer, good vegetarian foods, and good atmosphere. BUT, we went today with our one and a half year old toddler. NO BOOSTER SEATS OR CHILDREN SEATS. Man was this a bummer! We took a road trip to sit down and visit with family, and I spent the whole time walking "Little Man" down the steps, out on the sidewalk, just because there was no way to sit him down. This was really disappointing! Come on Mitch, get a couple of children chairs!!!
- Pros: Great Vegetarian Food, Beer, & Atmosphere
- Cons: NO CHILDREN SEATS OR BOOSTER SEATS
a perfect Raleigh bar
by summerbrew
It's truly an old school Raleigh college bar. Unpretentious, like some other reviewer put it is really a great way to describe this place. You can get good beer and chill with some buds here. It's my favorite b/c I used to go there alot until I became a second hand smoke snob. Then I learned it was smoke free and I go back because it's got that comfort bar feel to it. Kudos to this place.
It's definately not a swanky bar, but it just isn't a dive either. Somewhere in the middle.
- Pros: A great bar feeling, non-smoking
- Cons: Don't plan on dropping the kids off here, the crapper reminds me of the one at the East Village
Creak up the long flight of stairs into the murky light--Mitch's hasn't changed since you were an undergrad.

In Short
Paneled in dark wood, this comfy retreat is a great spot after a long day of classes across the street at NC State, or for meeting up after work or softball. Come as you are--you'll fit in just fine. And as for that sense of deja vu? Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins drank here in "Bull Durham." The laid-back atmosphere is accompanied by a good selection of beers and a full bar.
best gazpacho, poco.
by mu_shu_yu
y'all best listen up, they got d best gazpacho in town, y'hear? Now get out and enjoy some. be sure and take that annoying hot vegan guy or chick from work...
Always a Favorite
by little_foot
HIGHLY recommended. Sit with friends, college students, professors, local drunks, and have a blast.
This is a great bar, with really good food. The selections are huge and you can get really healthy food. The veggie chilli is amaaazing and the chef's salad with spinach has gigantic chunks of yummie raw veggies. The guys I've been with have loved the heavier stuff too, like meaty cheesy sandwiches and Rodolfo's Feast (try and finish it!)
The beer selection is amazing and impressive, and the bartenders and servers are consistently working their butts off to get everything out as fast as possible with a smile.
There are a lot of TVs and it can get kind of rowdy during NCSU games, but what else can one expect from a college bar on the campus strip?
LOVE this place.
- Pros: beer selection, food quality/prices, service
- Cons: none
