Great facility for low price, focused on service and wellness

by PenAndSword

I'm so sorry that some members had a bad experience here; maybe give it another chance?

I've found the atmosphere to be very warm and genuinely welcoming, and I've gone there almost every day for a month. (I don't use the equipment much, though, but I've never had to contest anyone for a machine... maybe I go during "off" hours, like 5-7pm?) The staff has gone out of their way to be kind; my classmates are polite and the teachers are treasures.

I think the facilities are amazing (especially for the low price). I like the health screenings they do, like cholesterol testing; I love the training programs they offer--like CPR and Discipline for Children and babysitting classes. Most of all, I'm happy about the service opportunities, like the Angel Tree gifts, the Red Cross drives, tutoring sessions for children, food collections, the Random Acts of Love and We Build People charity programs, etc.

This Y lives up to its founding Christian values, but makes a secular humanist like myself feel absolutely no pressure to share any particular world view in order to participate. All that for $30 a month is a bargain compared to most other gyms, and with the Y, you know it's not a meat-market or a place for hard bodies to show off. It's about fitness, wellness, and community, and my experiences have proved that true.

Plus, if you look at all that's going on in their calendar, class schedule, and fitness events... there's something for everyone.

Compared to the Y in Hollywood of which I was a member for almost 3 years, this one is way less snobby and far more interested in families, so... I really recommend it (or giving it a second chance, if your first time wasn't so hot.) ^_^

  • Pros: great charity and training opportunites; fun, diversified classes; low price; family atmosphere
  • Cons: Sometimes on the weekends the classes fill up fast

Not just dumbbells for dumbbells, this gym believes overall fitness means a healthy spirit, mind and body.

In Short
The Y has tons of free weights, fitness equipment, stair climbers, stationary bikes and just about anything else you can think of, including volleyball, golf and Tae Kwon Do. If it's a sport, the Cary Family YMCA has a league, clinic or lesson for it. Come cold weather, the Y spends two weeks covering its outdoor pool with a plastic bubble and adding a heater for the air and water.

Terrible Gym

by MonAccount

I understand that Cary is known for its lack of culture and its generally snotty people. The Y in Cary is the ultimate expression of these. People generally won't share equipment, and have not hesitated to take open equipment without regard for those standing to the side waiting. The staff consistently perform their jobs with a smile, yet there is no genuine warmth behind that smile. There is no community in the gym- just individuals fighting to be noticed and to ensure that they get what they want when they want it. To top it off, they lack enough equipment to accomodate everyone.

  • Pros: Convenient location
  • Cons: Terrible hours, Snotty clientel, Indifferent staff
