Tutoring to help Phonics and Reading
by lotusrose
My son started with Student Learning Recovery at the middle of 1st grade. Due to his low reading levels. At the time when he entered his tutoring program he was a level 5/6 in which that just barely made what he needed to be at for 1st grade. I knew with only 2 quarters left in the school year that the race with time was on.
Which brought us to Leslie who had to re-teach him how to blend all his sounds together. She started him on decoding words to help with his fluency. The system she put in place worked amazingly. Before long he had been decoding words, which allowed him to be able to write them as well. He was managing his spelling through the help of learning the decode process. In which this handled many issues for him and work for the first time started to become easier. As the lessons progressed he learned more tricks to help him with the trickier and much harder words, that at times seemed silly but again also worked extremely well.
Before the end of the school year my son had progressed so well that he was actually able to also move up on his math grades due to the fact he could finally read the word problems and come up with the right answer. He did so well that by the last meeting with the teacher 4 weeks prior to school ending , he had entered a reading level of 15/16 without any problems. A task the teacher never thought he'd reach because of the short amount of time and the major struggles he had.
Now, he is in second grade and is on grade after the 1st quarter and I have been able to take all that Leslie has taught us and apply it at home and he is able to continue the school process without the extra tutoring help. She has been a remarkable help with Joey and I would recommend this system to all who struggle with the same issues as I once did with my son.
