best spot around as far as I am concerned

by aaronx1683

this is one of the only spots around town that I actually feel welcomed. I can usually go in there and shoot the sht with about anyone in there. This is a great place to be if you just want to have some beers and be sociable with people. so it might be a dive bar but it is a great dive bar that has its own spirit and originality to it.

  • Pros: cheap drinks, diverse people and fun attitudes
  • Cons: the new bathrooms.

Great neighborhood bar

by asc1220

This is a great neighborhood dive, if you're into laid-back / blue collar bars. (If you're a yuppie, try the Ugly Monkey downtown, not the Goat.) It's small, the bartenders are personable & friendly (as are the patrons, most of the time), and the drink prices are good. A very diverse crowd, ethnically, economically, and age-wise: afternoons are an older after-work crowd, evenings and late nights bring out a younger crowd. Although it's close to NCSU, it's not much of a student hangout. It's mostly just locals from the neighborhood surrounding the Goat. So if you're just stopping in for the first time, you may not get its appeal ... come back, hang out, meet some of the locals.

The main downside - be prepared to smell like cigarette smoke afterward!

Ugh

by SeanEastwick

If you go to the Goat and you're of a different kind than the majority of the people there, they will make you feel unwelcome.

Go to the Goat if you want to spend your weekend time off with rude snobby weirdos who give you really bad service and keep an eye on you if you look different from the people there.

Simply put, the Goat only wants your money and your business if you look right. I just wish they would put up a sign saying what's on their minds and who they are not willing to serve and who they are.

Ignorance and Prejudice

by Submarine356

I agree with Gatorelena; the "Slant Eyed" Chinese New Year promotion was both offensive and hurtful. I'm not Asian; I'm a white woman, but there is _no_ _way_ that I would ever give my business to a bar that encourages people to think of ethnicity & culture as a costume. And I _definitely_ wouldn't want to hang out at a bar with anybody who thought that that was cool.

UNCLEAN

by busherbee

When it smells like sewage it is hard to get past that. I had to meet someone there, that is 3 hours of my life I can't get back. I'm glad they don't make the beer or I would have to pasteurize it before drinking it.

Beer served with Ignorance and Prejudice!

by gatorelena

I believe that this flyer that The Goat recently put out will speak for itself, it states: "Come Get Slant Eyed @ The Goat (no offense) For Chinese New Year's Wednesday Feb. 6th, 4705 Come party in your best Chinese outfit. $50 Gift Certificate for Best Outfit! Party favors and lots of giveaways!" And then there's a nice picture of an Asian-style dragon at the bottom. Now I am not one to get easily offended but I do feel that this is extremely rude, ignorant and something that should not just be brushed off as a silly flyer. I am a recent transplant from Washington, D.C. and this will just carry on that "Southern" stereotype in my mind. The only respect this flyer has given for the most important holiday in the Chinese culture is that they capitalized their C's for Chinese. Also, the fact that the author of this flyer took time out to include "(no offense)" is the most hurtful of all. Admitting that there is offense to be had and still printing out these flyers for mass distribution is beyond my comprehension. The Goat will never again see my business nor that of my friends (Asian and not).

total loser crowd, worse music, first timers hang out. lame

by master39

The goat has to be one of the worst places around. Same old crappy trashy women, same old wanna be dudes. Usually full of rude college kids looking to show you how stupid they can be. If you are looking for some easy sleezy women than this might be the place you want to go though. I almost forgot about all the low lifes that come in and make a scene. Could be the worst bar in raleigh.

  • Pros: I live on the other side of town
  • Cons: it is still open

Best Dive Bar in the Raleigh area

by sabastyanna

This is an absolute great place to hang out. Whether it is after work for a quick drink or late night weekends. It is very small very personal bar. A great place to meet fun new people. The bartenders are awesome. They are all really personable, and know how make a great drink. It is full of locals and regulars, and is a very casual environment, no need to dress up!! All in all it is my prefered bar in Raleigh.

Best lil dive bar in Raleigh

by jahllove

The Goat is a fun place to hang out. The bartenders are great and definitely know how to pour a drink. Plus, you never know who you're going to meet there! The after work crowd is a little older and most are NCSU alum. Late nights are VERY interesting, too! One suggestion, though: Don't wear anything that you don't want to smell like 1,000 cigarettes--this place gets super smoky!

  • Pros: No cover, great bartenders, unique atmosphere
  • Cons: SMOKY!
