OVERRATED!
by melisab
My 3 kids are ages 12.5 to 19... we couldn't find anything in this mess... it looks worse than a Goodwill store. As for selling your stuff there, total joke, as they snobbishly turn away 99.9% of good designer stuff then offer you pennies for what they keep. Not sure how they keep the place so packed, since from what I have read, seen, heard and experienced, they rarely buy much. Don't know if that's the case here, but when I lived in Florida some "consignment" stores were turning away folks because they were keeping the place stocked with stuff they bought at yard sales and sold back at their store... *shaking my head*
- Pros: packed with stuff
- Cons: very messy, rude staff, rip off
Doesnt live up to all the hype.

Everyone sees the commercials on television and it appears to be a place where you can make fast cash for clothes you no longer wear- but this is not the case. The adds say that they take brand name clothes in good condition- but they take themselves way too serious. They don't accept clothes in trash bags even though their whole store is trashed, overwhelmed with cheap and poorly made clothes. You have to pick up the clothes they don't take before they close or they throw them away. I took in three large hampers filled with clothes they said they would take including Hollister, Abercrombie and Ralph Lauren and they didn't take anything! They said that the clothes had to have been made in the past year (how do they even know when it was made)! They are less than helpful and the store has appeared trashed every time I have gone in there. You have to search through every single item of clothing because it is not organized in anyway. I always find myself getting frustrated and leaving before finding anything I like because of the crampt and overwhelming atmosphere. I would recommend just donating your clothes to Good Will rather than even trying to sell them to Platos- you will just get frustrated.
- Pros: plently of parking, can find stuff if you spend 6 hours looking, always is a lot of people shopping in store
- Cons: unorganized, store appears trashed, unhelpful staff, disgusting bathroom, small fitting rooms

I've sold here before....they rarely take the things I'd expect (i.e. designer jeans, etc.)....i've gone in & been told they don't take clothes in trash bags & of course mine was in a white bag....they proceeded to tell me I could go to a store and maybe get another bag (as long as it didn't come from anyone near that store)...then another time I brought clothes in a cloth bag to accommodate their non-trash bag policy....I was then told that I couldn't leave them to be looked at unless i could pick them up by closing (pretty much I was going to have to hang around for how ever many hours it was going to take to look through everyones items before mine)...yeah righhhhtttt. I thought the point was to buy your clothes, but it seems like they are just trying to make it impossible to even get your items looked at.
Not Worth the Time
by DiJi
Sure, you hear a lot of things about Plato's Closet. But no one tells you that it's all a waste of time. I went to Plato's Closet after doing "research" on what items they said they'd guarantee they'd take. So, I had two bags of Levi, L.E.I, Mudd, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, GLO, etc. etc. and dropped it all off. Firstly, they told me they would call me when they were finished looking through it all [I had given them the items around 6:30pm]. Two hours later, I still didn't receive a call so I went by myself. Found out they were finished.... but barely any items were taken. Not even the items they said they'd take, 100% [aka. women's shorts]. Not only did I waste my gas driving to and from, I wasted the effort. I was better off at a yard sale or even Goodwill.
Don't bother selling your clothes to them. They won't take it, not even if it's brand new or a gurantee buy.
- Pros: Cheaper brand clothing, Parking
- Cons: Service, Selling gurantee
Not worth the gas!

I took 2 huge bags of clothing into Platos Closet, pretty much all American Eagle, Gap, Hollister, Banana Republic and such. Some of the items still had tags. They said it would take them 2 hours to look through the things and they would call me when finished. About 2 hours later, they said that I could come back and get my quote. They did not even take one item. Dont waste your time dropping of your clothes. You are better off going to goodwill.

Not what I expected

I went in to Plato's Closet after seeing an ad about selling old clothes. I brought in a whole bag full of clothes that didn't fit me anymore or chirstmas present I didn't like and never returned. This included American Eagle jeans, The Limited jeans and other expensive items, some were never even worn! They took only two of the most unlikely articles of clothing. I was really surprised and I only got $3.45. That was not enough to pay for the gas to get there!
Generic Second-Hand Clothes
by fashiondude
If you're a guy with a generic sense of style and looking to save a buck, then this place is for you. Basically the clothes and prices you would find in an outlet mall. There are some higher end clothes, but most clothes seem geared towards middle schoolers or people who still dress like one. To be a fair, the prices are decent, and it is one of the few places that will give you cash on the spot for your clothes.
- Pros: Give you cash for clothes.
- Cons: Lame clothes.
Great place to shop, not to sell...
by sjc2
I took 2 bags of name brand clothes & some stylish but off brand hang-up items. The sales girl helped me put the hang-up (some from places like Wal-Mart's junior section-in a bag. I was asked to leave them overnight. The next day, the same person greeted me. They took NONE! She said, "They were all from places like Wal-Mart, right?" Only the ones she had helped me with were. She told me I could leave them there if I didn't want to "bother with them" as charities come in weekly to pick-up items. I told her "No, I'll take them to a consignment shop." I got the feeling that if I left them they would've tried to sell them anyway! After leaving, I noticed the other 2 bags were EXACTLY as I had left them- same folds & all! Oh well, their loss, my financial gain!
- Pros: inexpensive, good selection
- Cons: Buying consumer items, not profitable
