World of Difference...
by Blue Eyed angel
I want to comment on the If Black stay BACK posting. I am a frequent client at Von Kekel, and I am disgusted by the comments made about My Stylist. I want to state the obvious that Caucasian hair and African American Hair have a world of difference between them. I also have had my hair Butchered by many people who said they could do my hair cut and in truth had no clue what they were doing. I personally would appreciate someone who would tell me the truth about not being comfortable with my hair, rather than letting me Pay a large sum of money and screwing it up. This stylist showed a lot of class saying they could not work on your hair, and I wish more people told the truth about what they are able to do. If a stylist is experienced enough to know their limitations then THAT is a good stylist.
- Pros: Smart enough to know limitations
- Cons: UMMMMM???
Lisa is back
by citysearchfan
I am so thrilled to have my stylist back at Von Kekel. I love Aveda products and color and having my stylist Lisa back just completes the package. Now I can go back to having it all. She is fantastic with my thick unruly hair. She has taught me what to do to keep it in the best shape ever. I love Lisa and Von Kekel Salon.
- Pros: My favorite stylist is here
- Cons: none
Mountain from a mole hill
by firstcityvisit
I'm suprised that a simple miscommunication can be turned into a racial issue. This being my first visit to Citysearch I'm frankly disgusted at all the slurs allowed on this site.
Seeing a friend being touted as torch carrying KKK member is silly considering this particular lady has never uttered an off color comment.
A basic situation where not enough questions were asked and assumptions were made by both parties turned into hate spewing!
Von Kekel has a multi-cultural staff. We (yes I am an employee) are a family who would never tolerate an ugly word said to our stylists whether they be from Mexico, Africa, or Southern Louisiana! .Therefore in defense of Liz, I subjected myself to reading comments that were grossly off-base.
Maybe people should look at themselves before accusing others. And people, use a little couth!
- Pros: friendly stylists
Great Salon and Spa in Cary
by jjohnson15
I am a long time client of Von Kekel. My experiences have always been great. I have never written a review before ( I guess people tend to write them only when they have an bad experience). I decided to write a review because I had a particularly great experience recently. I went in for an appointment after having my hair done while out of town (yes a mistake!). My stylist fixed the damage (color and cut) that had been done, and I left feeling wonderful. I will never stray again.
- Pros: Friendly/Experienced Staff
owner supports ethnic customers
by Black stay back
When Sean learned of my experience his was disgusted. As a business man he understands the importance of the customers experience. He assured me that my situation would be addressed. The most important aspect of this horrible situation is that Sean was prepared to look at it straight in the face and admit that something bad had happened. His Northhill Salon does have experienced hair stylist that would love to do ethnic hair. I pray that this should never happen again to any american.
not good for blondes
by ellie86
I went to this salon 3 times last summer, all the employees were nice. The first time I went for all over light blonde, and the color came out great, however it was tooooooo costly. The 2nd time I went for a root touch up, and for a darker blonde, and the stylist decided to add in highlights without my approval.. some how my hair had a purple tent for a few weeks, which I wasn't able to see in the salon, but once I got out in the sun/parking lot, it was horrible.. and the bill was higher because of the highlights. All the hair dye washed out within a month and I was back to light blonde, so I went in and saw a different stylist who added in low lights to darken my hair to a dark blonde. It looked very good, however the dark blonde color washed out within a month and I was back to the light blonde, my hair wouldn't hold any color. After 8 months of being blonde, my hair was in such horrible condition from whatever they used, it was literally snapping off an inch from my scalp, and was fried.. nothing could help it. I deep conditioned it every 3 days, no luck what so ever. I had to chop it all off, literally.. and start all over. So be careful if you're blonde/going blonde!
- Pros: atmosphere, wine
- Cons: not experienced for blondes
They bleach stained my dress
by carymom18
Appears upscale, but my color results were average at best. Not the best place for blondes. They also accidentally bleach stained my dress. I didn't go back.
Dissapointed

Having gone to an Aveda salon before and receiving excellent results, I was excited about trying Von Kekel. I read the reviews and despite some warnings decided to give it a try. I asked for dimension and layers to my long hair. The result was 2 inches shorter (though I specified that I wanted to keep the length) with layers that appear to me to be more of uneven chuncks distributed randomly throughout my hair. The front is workable but the back has a solid block of layer that falls very badly and leaves a less than desireable look (does not lay flat and puffs out). I wish that the stylist would have asked more questions or clarified with me what I wanted if she didn't understand, instead of continuing with my cut. I wasn't overly excited about the style in the chair when she finished but after I got home and looked at it more I was really unhappy, and continue to be so. It will takes months to regrow the length that was cut off and to get it back to a point where it can be fixed. Needless to say, when I go to the counter and found out the charge was 60.00 I was even more upset. I am used to paying upwards of 40-55.00 for a cut and style at a nice salon. ( I do not mind paying for good quality and service) but 60.00 for a cut that I could have gotten elsewhere for 35.00 was unacceptable. Not to mention the other aveda salon I went to, the stylist told me her charge as soon as I got in the chair prior to doing anything else. I still like aveda products and will most likely try another one of their salons, but I was very disappointed with this salon, the price and the quality-Not worth the money or the drive (I drove an hour to go to a "better salon".
Von Kekel is the best!!
by cmdmc89
It is very difficult to find someone who is capable of listening and then creating the style that you are looking for. I see Krystal at the Cary location and she has been a life saver! After moving here a year ago, I have been drifting in and out of salons trying to find someone who will at least listen instead of doing whatever they want. I came in to check out the salon after reading other reviews and Krystal was able to fit me in for consultation. She talked me through the process, making me feel very comfortable and confident about my hair, which is pretty nerve wracking since in this humidity, most people cant even do my thick, curly hair! All in all, Krystal is the best stylist and I have never had more complements on my color and cut! I HIGHLY recommend Von Kekel!!!
- Pros: great service, great staff, great location!
go to melissa at raleigh location...
by msashlee
The first time I went to this salon, my hair came out really good, the 2nd time, it was horrific.. both times done by a male named trevor, who no longer works here. I did leave a bad review at first, and the owner responded... Luckily, he let me come back in to the raleigh location to get it fixed for free. Melissa was the one who fixed it, and she did a REALLY good job, considering my hair was a total mess! It's been a few weeks and the color has faded a bit, which was expected, so I have to go back in and get more lowlights added, and they recommended every 4 weeks to come back... but I don't mind.. it looks GREAT! THANKS MELISSA!
- Pros: ambience, free wine
