Raleigh >National Tire & Battery
How many chances do you give a place before you move on.... I bought a 3 year alignment plan from NTB as the BMW shop near by recommended them b/c thats where they send their cars for alignment. I bought 4 tires, upgraded my suspension and springs and brought it to Capital to have it aligned. They left the driver side hardware loose and let me leave this way. After visits to 2 other shops we discovered that nuts were only finger tight on the driver side and that the wheel should have fell off. This ruined my new tires because after it was finally alighned (by M Powered in Cary) the car still pulled to the left. We replaced the tires and I brought it there (who knows why) for an alighment this past week. Car drives straight and is vibration free but the wheel is not centered.... I called the shop in garner and asked if they could help and they told me to come on down. After getting there they tell me they don't have the tools to do my car properly and to go to the duraleigh location. They called ahead to make sure that they could handle the job and I listened to the conversation. When i get there.... Mark the manager says.... nobody called here and shook his head no.... On the way out he asked what do you need done... I was disgusted. I guess thats the service you can expect from the NTB group if you by an extended service plan... They figure they already have your money, nothing in it for them to do the work. Bad part was is I talked a gentlmen into a 5 year plan at the desk of the Garner store just before they told me they couldn't do the work after I drove from Knightdale to have the work done.... Remember, I called first and my name is in the computer. Car, make, model, and the service plan I purchased. A professional organization would have directed me to the proper store once they figured out who and what they were talking about. I drove around the triangle last night and wasted a ton of time.
New Tires and Wheels...BEWARE!.
I had a complete set of brand new tires and brand new rims put on my car by this particular NTB. In a word, it was a nightmare! It took four days for them to get it right...but I will say to their credit, they get 4 stars for effort. I would've given them 5 stars, but they only get four because it took four days and manager intervention for them to make it right.
The first set of tires and rims made my car vibrate horribly. Visit number 2 was to install plastic rings to make the new chrome wheels fit better and get rid of the shimmy. Long story short, this didn't work. Finally, on day 3 after much expense of time and energy, the new tires were removed from the new rims and the rims were found to be defective (out of round).
Day 4, the manager was very kind and we negotiated a deal and I returned the entire set of rims and tires for an exchange into yet another brand new set of tires and chrome wheels (set #2).
Before mounting the second set of rims and tires, the rims were put on the balancing machine and tested to make sure they were all in round and not defective. Thankfully, they were not defective. A final test drive found very little shimmy, though there was still a bit of a roughness in the ride.
I was told that the wheels would need to be tightened after 25 miles of driving. After 25 miles, the shimmy returned. I went to the NTB store in Carey and had the wheels re-tightened. The manager there told me that if the shimmy continues, I need to order plastic rings made specifically for the second set of chrome wheels. At this writing, the shimmy has not returned, but if it does you can bet your bottom dollar I will be back to NTB with receipt in hand to order a new set of plastic rings.
I am not happy that it took 4 days of doing it "their way" to get my car to perform as it should, but mechanical things can be frustrating. I want to give credit to the manager (David) of the NTB store in North Raleigh. He went out of his way to make me happy and to make it right. He was courteous and friendly and even though the entire situation was a pain in the butt for me, him, and his service techs, they toughed it out and battled on exploring the problem until it could be resolved in a reasonable fashion.
Yes, it was a 4 day nightmare, but the staff and management tried very hard to back up their products and warranty, and tried their human best to make me a happy and loyal customer. It's not their fault the first set of chrome rims were defective. I just wish we had spun those crappy rims in the first place. Doing so would've prevented 4 days of pain in the ass frustration for all of us...live and learn!
