Tips for Eastern Chinese Restaurant

January 16, 2013

I like it! I ate here regularly from 2005-2007. Then, I moved away from NC and have since returned. There are a lot of choices for chinese buffet in Raleigh, but I generally get my to-go buffet from here. I love the black pepper and mongolian chicken, as well as the grilled chicken on sticks. I don't eat sushi, desserts, beef, shrip or pork, so I can't speak as to those dishes. The place is not brand new, but I see nothing wrong with the decor or cleanliness. The health rating is current a 94, the staff is friendly and prompt. I'm satisfied and will return again and again.

Nasty!!!. First the lady at the front was RUDE! What little food was on the buffet was extremely stale. The floors and bathroom were filthy. I don't even want to imagine what the kitchen is like. Someone needs to come inspect this place!

Dirty, ugly, smelly remnant of a good restaurant. I used to like coming here back when I used to work by here, but it's gradually gotten a lot dirtier and untidier. I can't come here anymore without getting just sick to my stomach. I don't even bother going here anymore. What a shame.

eastern chinese buffet. My family and I have been going here for about a year. The service has been going downhill in the past few visits. The food is not always fresh looking and last week there was a huge cockroach in one of their dishes. We will definitely not be eating here again!!!

This place if FILTHY. The restaurant is REALLY dirty. The review of tmx is pretty much spot on. I started noticing how extremely dirty everything was while eating and honestly thought I was going to get sick. If a restaurant is that dirty where the customers sit, imagine how bad it is in the kitchen.... we will NEVER eat there again, and you shouldn't either.

Another place we'll have to leave behind. Been coming here for years. The buffet has always been decent (with the exception of the wonton soup which is often stocked with stale/dried-out wontons) and the sushi bar very good...all in all, it's been a generally good, inexpensive experience whether eat-in or take out.

That said...

Recently we have noticed an obvious decline in cleanliness, particularly in the lobby area. The carpet is filthy, there are greasy streaks and fingerprints on the glass, fishtank and woodwork, small children (probably of the employees) occasional running around, and the mess (toys, stickers, etc...) that usually accompanies a childrens play area. My last time in, approximately early February 2011, after taking it all in during a wait for my take-out order to be ready and slowly losing my appetite, I decided that maybe it was time to start looking for a new place.

The final nail, however, came this morning. After reading a story @ the wral website regarding the lax restaurant inspection standards by the wake county health dept, I looked up Eastern Chinese (AKA Eastern Buffet, New Eastern Buffet) ratings and was floored by how completely nasty this place is behind the scenes. Roaches, bugs, "vermin", improper food storage, improper food handling, multiple sanitary issues.... the list goes on.

This can be verified at wake dot digitalhealthdepartment dot com , enter 'eastern buffet' in the search box and the past year in the date range.

I will never, ever eat there again. My only regret is that's it's not possible to leave a zero star review.

Best lunch in town. My wife and I eat at this buffet many times each week. For the price, It has the best lunch in town. Sushi, hand dipped ice cream, home-made noodle soup that you decide what goes in it is only a small part of the menu. You can order off a Menu or enjoy the buffet. Supper is also good, and is different from Lunch. We find the service very good, in fact, we know the servers by name. We also like the fact that the servers get the ice cream, and not everyone is in the box (if you have been to other buffets, you understand.). I liked what one person wrote in the reviews, take small portions each time the visit the buffet, that way you don't end up with more than you can eat and waste the food. They also do offer take-out buffet (by the pound) or a Menu if you are in a hurry. ENJOY

This place is nasty. I dined there on a Sunday evening. The sushi looked like it had been sitting out for hours, and some of the prongs you use to handle the sushi were in the sushi. The rice had been out so long that it was hard, and the sweet 'n sour chicken was bland. I will not dine there again.

Bring the family - this place is great. Our family loves this restaurant. The kids have full control of their dining destiny. You can sample Asian and American food from the hot and cold buffet. As the previous reviewer mentioned, this restaurant has a fantastic sushi bar. I must also mention that the restaurant serves the greatest coca cola in all of Raleigh - ice cold and full of carbonation (not that this is a dining requisite, but it sure hits the spot!).

I do not know where to begin with the hot buffet. One recommendation - don't pile your plates full of food - take a sample back to your table, try it out and then keep going up as many times as you like. One word of caution...if you take crab claws from the buffet, you will be charged an extra $2. This may be mentioned on the large diplay board when you enter the restaurant, but your server will not tell you this and there is no sign above the claws at the buffet. Since I am not a fan of these particular kind of claws, I would recommend to stick with everything else (hot, cold and sushi). For dessert, there are some pastries and an ice cream bar (your server will assist with this).

All in all, great food, good atmosphere, great value and nice people can be found here.
