In Short – When Colonel Joel Lane gave the go-ahead, dirt began flying as the city of Raleigh staked its claim on part of Lane's plantation. That was in 1792. So the City of Oaks grew, but Lane's quarters, a two-story buttercup farmhouse, stayed put. Today it is Raleigh's oldest home, and it is open for tours.
