Tips for Side Street Restaurant

Small and Good. This small, intimate restaurant is locally owned and operated. If you want to experience "cookie cutter" food and service, then go to a chain. I love the sandwiches, soups and salads. Quaint building and fun place to eat. There is no 10-minute lunch so don't expect it. Love the place and go often.

Worst Sandwich I Have Ever Had. I had only heard good things about Side Street so I decided to try it for lunch today. Not only was the person ringing people up very rude and not hospitable but the food was awful.

I ordered one of their sandwiches and there was so much sauce, mayo, and cole slaw that by the time I attempted to eat the sandwich the bread was soggy and the meat just fell out, dripping along the way.

It has been a few hours since I had a few bites of this sandwich and I still feel ill. I didn't see anything there that is worth trying a second time.

3 Year Old Menu Prices Online??. I placed a telephone take-out order for 8 lunches based on the printable menu found on Side Street's web-site. I calculated what I thought would be the total due from each co-worker and headed to the restaurant with just enough to cover the bill. After being rung up by a clerk who looked uninterested I discovered I was $6 short. I was then told by another employee that if I used the online menu that the prices were wrong and that "they" have not been able to update the menu for the past 3 years. We then went back and forward over who was at fault them or me. How can you advertise out dated prices online but then put 100% of the blame on me a first time customer? The owner/manager came out and accepted the money I had but she too kept saying that I should not have gone by what was online. I won't be going back to Side Street any time soon.

Cash only!. A recent visit to Side Street has made me not want to return; at check out the group in front of my did not realize they only accept cash or checks and when I got to check out with a $50 bill they didn't have change. How can you not have change if you only take cash?

Sandwiches are great, but lunch service is slow...do not expect to get back to work within an hour time frame.

For a $12 lunch I want to use my debit card please!

Great sandwiches but.... We have been here many times and the food has been good each time, but recently we experienced numerous fruit flies/nats at the table throughout the meal. It was very unpleasant. Not sure I want to risk going here again.

Great sandwiches, spotty service during peak hours. Love the sandwiches here - from traditional to off the wall but yummy inventions (my favorite is a peanut butter conconction with marshmallow fluff!). Good vegetarian options, as well. Service is either great or cranky and harried, depending upon the number of customers. I suggest not going at peak (12-1) times if service is very important to you. Lovely bright atmosphere in an historic building, great lunch spot for downtown when you don't want to spend a fortune. Don't think they take credit cards, although I think they may take local (Wake County) checks.

Surprised at negative reviews. I've been to Side Street Cafe on several occassions and have enjoyed each time I've gone. They have a wide variety of unique and interesting sandwiches, but it is the desserts that are the true reason for going. Save some room at the end of your meal for some key lime pie, you won't be dissapointed. As for the few negative reviews, I can't explain it as I have always found the staff to be very friendly and the environment pleasant.

horrible customer service. Every single time I go here, they are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. They always seem stressed and behind because of the number of customers there. HIRE MORE STAFF! If you're so busy and doing so well, surely you could hire another waitress and another cook. The first time I went, they seemed to forget about our table (which had 6-8 people) and it took over an hour to get sandwiches. In subsequent times, it has not been any better. This includes take-out and sit-down. I am not the kind of person who usually complains about customer service, and am very forgiving of wait staff. But it's really bad here. They need to hire an appropriate number of people to handle all their customers.

Unwelcome. I wanted to try a new sandwich restaurant so I stoped by Side Street instead of my usual Sunflowers. I have been curious about them for awhile. I followed the signs to the restaurant door not the "take-out door". I walked in the restatuant to face a large sign that stated "please wait to be seated". So I stood there while a hurried women passed me by, she did not acknowledge my presence. When she came back into the room she asked me if was there for take out. I said no. She told me to sit anywhere and she would bring me a menu. I sat there for about five minutes before someone yelled out to my back "one or two" I yelled back "one". Then she yelled "what you'll you have to drink", since I had never been there before, I did not know what they had nor do I have a menu yet to see. I responded "I don't know". After five more minutes without a menu, I realized I was obviously interrupting them so I promply left. I will never return. Meanwhile, they had no other customers to wait on.
