Apex >Tyler's Restaurant & Taproom
Terrible, terrible, terrible..
Do not even waste your time going to this place. A couple friends and I decided to eat here last night, and boy were we disappointed. I ordered the BBQ Plate(switched out mustard greens to MacnCheese), while my friends ordered the Herb Chicken Sandwich and the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. First, our food took roughly 45 minutes to arrive, and when I got my food, it tasted horribly. The pulled pork was dry and cold, you could tell it had been sitting around. The accompanying cole slaw tasted terrible and was just incredibly sour and tasteless, it honestly almost tasted like it had gone bad.
The herb chicken sandwich was very dry, while the buffalo chicken sandwich was just doused in buffalo sauce and cheese.
The only good thing about our meal was our server, who was pretty prompt. However, at the end of the night I was pretty outraged to see that I had been charged $3 extra for swapping out my mustard greens for my mac and cheese. Why? Because for one thing, the mac and cheese cost less than the mustard greens(according to their own menu), and also because I was charged as if I had the mustard greens AND the mac and cheese.
All in all, I had a terrible experience at Tyler's Restaurant and Taproom, do not even bother with this place.
Beer Lover's Heaven.
This may be the most critical review that I will write, but i'm still giving 3 stars to be fair. A second visit will be needed.
Every once in a while, I enjoy trying new beers. When I saw their tap line-up and bottle list (included was my favorite Michigan brew, Bell's), I had such high hopes. I figured if they took that much time in providing such a diverse beer menu, that their food menu must be the same. Unfortunately I was wrong. I was disappointed in the menu, it left quite a bit to be desired. It border lined the typical "bar food" menu but had a hodge podge of dinner / ethnic items thrown in there with the fried appetizers and burgers.
We began our meal with the cheese queso dip, it was fairly good, but not enough for the mountain of chips they serve with it. My husband's dinner, a quesadilla, was standard but had very little "filling". My fish and chips tasted ok, however, the breading was too heavy and too greasy (loved the dill tartar sauce though).
Now, on to the service. I am a patient person with servers and bartenders. Everyone has a bad day now and again, and add to that crabby know-it-all customers and griping bosses, and you have one miserable and lack luster server. As much as I can sympathize, I do have to say that our server seemed absolutely miserable and lacked any sort of customer relation skills. We hardly saw her and when I did see her, she was standing by the bar talking with what appeared to be the management (smiling, which I didn't think she could do). Sooo, not only was the management standing around, they were letting their staff do the same (there were other servers following suit). Lead by example!
WIth all of that said, I am still considering a second trip. I am hoping that they will give me a reason to come back and write another, yet better, review. After all, I was loving their beer selection.
***UPDATE 2/20/11 : Recently went back in to have some drinks, my husband and I sat at the bar and received EXCELLENT friendly service from the male bartenders - who also happened to make an AMAZING cosmo! I will be back =) ***
Excellent Place for an Intimate Gathering.
The main portion of Tyler's is a restaurant and a bar; the other is more like a traditional bar with pool tables and some seating.
It is an excellent place to go if you have four or five people (or less). Great place to take a date or to catch up with a small group of friends. The food is good. The beer is excellent.
Now, mind you, this isn't a place that will blow your socks off, nor is it a really inexpensive place to eat. Each beer is around $5 or so and the average meal will come to $10 (plus or minus a few dollars).
But it does have a good atmosphere, the wait staff are very friendly and nice. I'd definitely recommend it for a date (if you're not looking for something formal) or a good place to relax with a few close friends.
Tyler's has become a good standby destination for me in Chapel Hill/Carrboro.
Don't Waste Your Time With This Place. Friends from Apex brought us there to show us a good time. Unfortunately, they were mortified and embarrassed by night's end. Food was less than okay. Overpriced beer was flat. Don't have a straight pool stick in the joint for the billiard tables. Service was less than up to par. And to boot, their Management Staff are absolutely clueless, a bunch of posers. You'd think that after dropping $175 on a group of 4 people for the evening, they'd provide minimum courtesy to call a cab/taxi for the group upon calling it a night -- but no, they thought it more appropriate to berate them instead -- real CLASSY Tyler - NOT! Wouldn't go back there if you paid me.
