What People Are Saying About The Raleigh Times

In Short – The interior of Raleigh Times is made up of peeling paint, faded brickwork and soaring 15-foot pressed-tin ceilings juxtaposed with gleaming light wood floors and a contemporary room-length curved bar. Framed mementos of the building's past cover the walls--newspaper clippings, early 20th century news photos and lead type unearthed during the restoration. The menu features traditional pub fare with a twist: Look for BBQ pork nachos, crispy catfish and chips, and chicken fried pickles.
Editor's Tips
- What to Drink:
- Like Belgian beer? The restaurant offers an extensive Belgian portfolio that includes more than 25 different Belgian beers.
- The Extras:
- Unlike many pubs, this one features a full selection of vegetarian-friendly dishes.
- Know Before You Go:
- Once home to the Raleigh Times--one of Raleigh's first newspapers--this historic downtown location has been reincarnated as an upscale pub.
Dont Eat the FISH
by rhyan17
we drove in to see some friends and headed down to The Raleigh Times for dinner.. What a mistake!! I ordered fish and chips and got 90% chips and 10% fish.. I also ordered fried pickles.. tasted great, but got 8 whole sliced pickles, not spears, just sliced.. .. that’s it, 8 sliced pickles..getting back to the fish, the 3 extremely small pieces of fish i got were about equal to 3 fish sticks from a frozen meal, If I wanted just chips, i would have ordered just chips.. extremely disappointed in the place....Also, my friend from Raleigh, ordered a beef dip sandwich, she found a 8-9" piece of hair in it.. they did take care of that,( gave her a gift card) but didn’t really care about the lack of fish, and didn’t seem to care about much else either..I probably will never go there again, I know I will never go there again... SO ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!, with all the restaurants in downtown, you would think they would give you a decent dish. ( Long John Silver’s gives you more fish!!) I'll go there next time I want fish and chips, Ill go to Long John Silvers.. what a disappointment.. good luck

If you like to drink great beer, eat awesome bar food and hang out with your friends in a great atmosphere then you will probably like Raleigh Times. If you don't then you should go get your head checked because you can't' wrong with the times!!!
Hell....I've been thrown out of this place a couple of times because I gotten into with some of the bartenders and I still come back. That's how great it is and if you have had a bad experience I would say that you come back and give it another chance.
Won't go back!

I had read that Raleigh Times had the best burgers in downtown. Went there to pick up a business lunch order that we called in. We were told it would be ready in 30 minutes. We get there and the bartender says our order is not ready. We wait about 15 minutes and he comes over and asks the name again. He then turns around and gives us our order that had been there on the bar when we arrived, so it was now cold. He did not even apologize or offer any discount. I ordered a med-well burger that was so red in the middle, I could only eat around the outside. Not what I expected for a $9 burger. To make it worse, I sent an email to the manager about this. Still no response.
Raleigh Times are good times.

Raleigh Times Bar (RTB) impressionably is the center of the universe, if that universe is downtown Raleigh. I came to this conclusion during Hopscotch Music Festival when RTB hosted its own unaffiliated, day-long block party and it resembled the festival itself. I’ve eaten many meals, as well as, kick-started or ended many late nights here.
Overall, it’s a really cool bar with a wide selection of beverages (beer/cocktail) and decent food.
I find it amusing there is a column on the menu entitled “Bar Food”…I feel all RTB entrees qualify as bar food.
Food Specifics:
The Grilled Cheddar, Avocado, & Tomato sandwich is crazy good, when toasted thoroughly (50/50 success). The Raleigh Times Burger is an award winning burger – my lunch mate verbally confirmed “this is the best burger I’ve ever eaten”…mid-bite. Pork Nachos/Loaded Fries are a late night favorite amongst the friends. The pork was once provided by the Pit – I’ve noticed this info is no longer highlighted on the menu… mystery BBQ? Prime-Rib French Dip doesn’t disappoint. Be sure to try the tasty house cut chips with their garlic ranch.
The Crunchy Chicken Tacos are not good, according to one truly dissatisfied tex-mex fanatical lunch-mate. The Fish & Chips basket is a sad attempt at a Brit classic – good beer battering, but too greasy & perhaps frozen?
I’ve shared Sangria carafes and RTB has a delicious recipe. They also take great pride in their extensive beer collection, and keep fans up-to-date via Facebook regarding arriving & departing beers.
Overall, RTB is more of a good time than a good restaurant… but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I love going to Raleigh Times. Their beer selection, though somewhat pricey, is really creative. They offer some of the most unique and interesting brews. The food here is also excellent. I am really sad that they took the Pit bbq sandwich off the menu, though.
