I have been a server for six years so I tend to give waitstaff more than just the benefit of the doubt. However, it seems to me that the staff at Buku knows it's a very posh, innovative place, and have become pretentious because of it.
My husband and I made reservations and arrived a few minutes early. The hostess noted we had arrived and told us we could get a drink at the bar -- it was going to be a few more minutes, and she'd come get us. That was fine, I had wanted a cocktail anyway. So we stayed at the bar for half an hour past when our reservation was for. My husband went to the hostess stand and asked how things were progressing, and she said, "Oh, I had been looking for you!" I never once saw her enter the bar area, and I had been watching closely! We were seated and our server took a very long time getting our order. He made a lot of hand flourishes that were plain awkward and he kept taking my husband's menu from him to point out things.
Our food was pretty good. The pibil, especially, was so good that I have attempted to make pibil at home several times to recreate it. My husband ADORED the lamb kefta,
We had to wait a very long time for our bill, as well, and by that time I was finished with the whole experience.
Excellent spot downtown. I went with my girlfriend and her family this past weekend and the experience just amazing. We had about 8 plates between all of us to share. The portions were just right and wasn't too expensive either. The quality of the food is definitely top notch. The only con I can think of was that we didn't see our waiter too often. Other than that, it was a very enjoyable experience.
Terrible Service. We went to Buku Saturday February 19th, 2011. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:50. My husband and I ordered four different items (two forms of sushi and two small plates). The first sushi dish arrived at 8 PM, the second sushi dish arrived at 8:30. Our first small dish arrived at 9 and then we were waiting for our last dish at 9:30 and the server comes up and says "Waiting on anything else?" and we said "Yes - the fourth dish". Then he start blaming anyone but himself. This whole time we were never asked if we wanted another drink and our water was never refilled. We finally got out at 10 PM. Sushi was good, small dishes were not. Service was horrible. Never again.
Interesting Restaurant. Some friends and I tried this restaurant back in September and were very pleased. The menu is different and interesting from other restaurants in the area. They also have a nice outside dining area that is very pleasant if the weather if nice because you can enjoy your food and drinks while seeing whats going on in downtown Raleigh. I would recommend for anyone to give it a try.
rude bartender. We stopped in for a quick drink after dinner at another establishment. I asked the bartender if he would suggest the sangria. He said yes while shaking his head no. So I asked if it was really a yes or a no. He then said, "Even if it was bad would you expect me to tell you that?" I responded that I would prefer the truth. That's when he walked away. So we did too. We left without ever ordering drinks. Maybe I would give them another chance, but no time soon.
Best Philly Steak Sandwich!. The Philly Steak was fantastic! The atmosphere is elegant contemporary and the food genre is global cuisine. Even though there were peppers on my sandwich after I specifically asked for no peppers, it was still fantastic. The french fries were old, cold, and less than bold; but overall, a great experience and great food!
awesome dinner at buku.
I have had several dinners at buku over the past month or so, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience each time. It seems that weekends are much busier than weekdays, but luckily my party had a reservation and didn't have to wait. There's also a large patio, where I've eaten the majority of the time.
Everything I've eaten has been great. The menu is large enough that I've tried something new each time. My favorite things so far have been the tuna tetaki and the short rib-- both generous servings, and excellent.
The cocktail list is awesome. They changed it up after my first couple of visits, and I love the new additions. The sangria is incredible. The cocktails are interesting, and the kind you don't see anywhere else. I also like their wine list because it was very affordable.
I highly recommend Buku, either for a date night or a night out with friends. Make sure to make reservations if you want to go on a weekend night.
Stay away from the Sea Bass, got sick!.
Last Friday, we tried Fins located in downtown Raleigh.
We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. They came out with our first appetizer. Then we waited it seems like the longest time, until they came out with my Sea Bass entree, and the appetizer that look like a scallop main course for my partner. We explained the mix up to two waiters. And I ended up eating my entree, while he waited for his entree to be cooked up.
On to the Sea Bass, I thought it tasted good, but then I got sick the next day. Don't want to grosse people out, but I had keriorrhoea. Googling what could be the cause came out to be Escolar or Sea Bass. We weren't looking for any sort of compensation, but my partner had called to let the restaurant manager know about me getting sick from their fish; and for them to throw out that stuff before anyone else got sick. They didn't seem to care, and said noone else reported being sick.
For the amount of money we spent at the restaurant to only get sick after a meal, I wouldn't go back to this place! It's overrated in my opinion.
I give them two stars instead of one because the manager did try to please us by giving us free sorbet.
WOW is all I can say!.
Fins used to be our Pre-Valentine's day dinner location (we never go out on Valentines day!) Unfortunately, 2 yrs ago we had to change that tradition because we moved to AZ temporarily. Now that we are back, we had decided to go back to our favorite Pre-Valentine's spot! We ordered a bottle of wine and proceeded with the meal.
We chose the Pris Fixe, this means that the chef will choose your dishes for you and it turns out to be a 4-5 course meal. Our waiter,Matthew, asked about food allergies or aversions. we said YES- since we are not fond of oysters, and I then told him I was afraid of the Octopus. Well, apparently the chef found this to be a challenge! When the waiter brought out the first dish as the octopus, I thought he was joking. The waiter was very serious and said the chef insisted we try it, if we didn't like it, he would buy our wine for us. Well, I am not a super adventurous eater, but I tried it... the verdict- I didn't like it, and apparently, before even being bribed to try it, hubby tried it as well and didn't like it. Oh well, on a positive note, I tried something new and got a free bottle of wine in the process!
The rest of the courses were just amazing, even other dishes that I wasn't certain I would like were all just perfectly matched and had amazing flavor.
Before we even went to the restaurant we had read one horrible review from a previous customer, and were very nervous about coming back, and after the unfortunate Octopus incident, we were REALLY nervous! But, after the octopus, the chef batted 1000!!! Typically you are supposed to have 4-5 courses, but I think we ended up with 7 in total. The dinner was amazing, and now we are trying to figure out how to come back more often. The cost of our meal was $180 and a $44 tip. The whole experience did take us 4 hours, so if you plan to do the pris fixe be prepared for a very long meal, but 100% worth it!
The food in the RDU area continues to amaze me!!. After eating many, many superior meals at Fins at the Sawmill location, and the recent Greg Cox review, trying the new location was an easy choice to take my best foodie friends! Our table was not yet ready so going to the beautiful bar was another easy choice. We ordered our drinks, mine being my usual Bombay Sapphire martini were promptly made to order except mine came in a rocks glass since my wife got the last martini glass....gr-r-r-r-r. The table was still not ready so I had a Kir Royal which was perfect. The bar staff was superior especially the young lady who really knew her stuff. The dining area was very well appointed, roomy, modern and very comfortable. Food apps etc were ordered and then to the wine list, It was well thought out, to match the cuisine, pricing within reason., however the first 2 wines I ordered were out of stock, not a good thing....The meal, well all I can say is extraordinary! Every app, salad soup entree I sampled was excellent. as was the service. I personally had a veal dish that could not have been improved upon, my mouth is watering as I think about it!! Without the above listed MINOR exceptions this may well be the best meal I have had in a long time, and I expect to return ASAP! Bon Appetit!! Wolf
