Raleigh >Food & Dining > Falls River Smokehouse
The place closed on January 21st, 2009.
No more BBQ...
Unfortunate, but maybe they can find a place with lower rent and open up again.
One can only hope...
Loooooooong wait for food.
The owner is very nice, but who the heck does he hire?? I went last year and never came back for a year because it literally took me 45 minutes to get my food! I'm not kidding. Another couple up and left because of the long wait. Well, I decided I'd try it out again. I figured they probably (hopefully) got their act together. The server kind of yelled at me when I went to refill my soft drink (soft drink vendor was out in the open!) and slapped my hand practically when I got more napkins. "I'll get it! I'll get it -- sit down!" I felt handcuffed and ball-and-chained. "Bad Boy" if I were to get up. Either they were overly concerned that I was exerting myself, or they wanted to serve me and therefore get a tip. My food took 35 minutes to come. The girl, a little ditzy, said "It was back there but I forgot who it was for." Duh! And then she did it AGAIN to my friend who had to wait another half hour to get her burger.
FOOD: Good chicken, pretty good ribs (mine are better, if I do say so myself), TERRIBLE cole slaw with NO taste, and tasteless mac-n-cheese. How can mac-n-cheese be tasteless? My friend's fish tacos were good, he said, but he likes everything. (hey Mikey!)
They close early. If you want to eat after 8:00 on some nights, you'll be looking at a CLOSED sign.
They have wonderful tables outside, but alas... they're always LOCKED UP! Not very inviting.
I've eaten at probably around 30 BBQ places around the state, and this one has to be one of if not the best. The BBQ is perfectly done, the cornbread is excellent, great brunswick stew, great brisket, and always make sure to order the Krispy Kreme bread pudding.
I live about 40 minutes from here, but could see it becoming a destination restaurant.
I ate there with a few friends the other night and the food and servivce were fantastic. I had the BBQ chicken with slaw and sweet potato fries. I got two sets of legs and thighs cooked to perfection. Not over done. Not under cooked. Just perfect. The best BBQ sauce in the world won't help a dried up chicken, so from the get go, the meal was doing well!
The BBQ sauce was among the best I've had, and I've quite a lot of eastern Carolina BBQ. Along with the meal came cornbread that was also cooked to perfection. Not too dry. Not too moist. Just perfect.
My friend had the burger. He liked it so much he ordered a second one. He wouldn't share it either!
The service was first rate as well. The staff was friendly and fast, and we didn't have to wait for anything. Mr. Griffin himself came out and spent more than a few minutes talking with us about the food and the service. He was very interested in what we as customers had to say, with an eye toward making his restaurant better.
The restaurant itself was neat as a pin and clean.
The prices are very reasonable as well. I didn't have dessert, but I got out of there for under $10. Given the quality of the food and service, that's a steal. If I get back to the Raleigh area, I'm going back to the Falls River Smokehouse for sure.
Absolute BEST Carolina BBQ, Corn Bread, and Krispy Kreme bread pudding!.
Myself and two other US Army officers stopped by the Smokehouse based on hundredsof local recomendations we receoved from the great soldiers of the the North Carolina Army National Guard. They stated that the BEST Eastern Carolina BBQ is located at Mr Griffin's new Smokehouse. We travel the country training different military organizations and also check out the BBQ in great cities like Kansas City, Memphis, Dallas, and now throughout North Carolina. This is our first 5 Star in several stops in North Carolina and extremely well deserved! The three of us tried several dishes to include BBQ chicken, Angus hambuger that was amazing!, corn bread, sweet tea refilled by a pleaseant waitress before it was half empty, sweet potato fries, unbelievable pork, and a krispy kreme bead pudding that was amazing. The Dir of OPs, Mr Griffin walsk the floor and ensures that all the food is wonderful! We never saw the owners at the other three BBQ establishments we visited. I guess the several thousand soldiers throughout the Raleigh/Durham area know GREAT BBQ! Ohhh! For all the military and Veterans out there - Vernon added the militart discount to the tab. The final tab was 60% less than the other 3 BBQ joints we visited in Raleigh area! We and the 1,000's of soldiers of the GREAT NC National Guard will continur to dine with Vernon and his staff!
Great food, comfortable atmosphere, and good people. Never been to Texas and have no plans to go, so I can't say anything about authenticity of the brisket, but I can tell you that it's GOOD! And I CAN tell you that the carolina-style BBQ is excellent. So are the ribs, the cornbread, the brunswick stew, the collards, potato salad, the key-lime pie, and everything else I've tried there--and so is the company!! Hubby really loves the fish tacos. I don't like fish, or I'd probably like them, too. I like that the owners try new dishes. There are very few restaurants--especially comfortable, reasonably-priced ones--that have such a varied menu. So, go ahead. Give 'em a try. You won't be sorry. And if you're lucky, Vernon will bring out a fresh, hot batch of cracklin cornbread while you're there--or a new cookie that they're testing for a new dessert--and offer you one.
NOT SO GREAT BBQ!!!!!!.
TRIED FALLS RIVER SMOKEHOUSE ON A REVIEW THAT HAD BETTER BRISKET THAN EVER HAD IN TX.
WHO EVER WROTE IT MUST HAVE NOT EATIN ANY FROM TX. SINCE IM FROM THERE.THE BRISKET DIDNT EVEN HAVE A SMOKE RING. WHICH ALL SMOKED BBQ HAS. THE ONLY THING I FOUND GOOD WAS THE CORNBREAD. I HAVE HAD BETTER BBQ BRISKET AROUND. ILL HAVE TO STICK TO MY OWN
TILL I FIND SOMEPLACE THAT IS BETTER. WONT EAT THE AGAIN.
I tried out Falls River Smokehouse the other day upon a web recommendation and found the food to be very good. The 'cue was moist and tasty, but the spare ribs were excellent. Nice smoky undertones that not overpower the meat.
I will eat there regularly.
