Tips for Oliver Twist

August 26, 2012

It's a bar. Food & service leave a lot to be desired. Believe it or not after our waitress gave us a list of employees who did not show up for work that night (as an excuse for poor service)..... they put an unannounced 20% gratuity on our check. We had an early pre-entertainment dinner reservation. Should have picked Humble Pie for tapas.

We really enjoyed the atmosphere at Oliver Twist. I went there a couple of times on weekends, the music is fantastic. It appealed to young and old. The staff was professional, friendly, and helpful. The ambiance was lively, but not overwhelming. The food was delightful and really made this a place worth checking. Outstanding wine list, but it trended towards the expensive side. We will definitely return.

disaster. we bought one of their living social coupons. basically half price for some tapas, a dessert and two glasses of wine. they limited your choices, they were out of desserts. the house wine, which was the only one they allowed tasted like a**. they obviously were not trying to get return customers, just trying to make a couple extra bucks. offering a deal and inviting someone to come and try what you have to offer means letting them try what you have to offer. they treated coupon holders like we were scum or something. they let many parties wait for over an hour while lots of tables sat empty. they had a band and when the band stopped they never put any other music on. this was the second time they had lost our reservation (we thought we'd give them another chance, everyone has bad nights) the first time they didn't have our reservation they sat us at this tiny table in the bar area. people kept putting their dirty dishes and empty glasses on our table. our watiress spilled a whole beer on my leg and no apology, no free drink.....nothing. they lost our reservation again, or never wrote it down in the first place. they ended up letting us get our food in a take out order. but it was really disappointing. the hostess was uptight , rude and clearly can't handle her job. the whole place is a disaster. won't go back : ( i totally agree with another reviewer who said they don't deserve the 4 1/2 star rating what !!!!!!! ??????? no way.

Simply wonderful. Oliver Twist really does an outstanding job. Fantastic food, excellent service and sexy atmosphere. Good portions for tapas and reasonable drink prices. Definitely going back.

Delicious Tapas. This is the place to come, relax, and enjoy a glass of wine or two. We found Oliver Twist 3 years ago when we moved to Raleigh and have never been dissapointed. Outstanding quality and service. If you are looking for delicious tapas, this is the place to go. Everything is fresh and satisfying, and the menu itself is fun and inspiring-- with an incredible wine-list to boot! Great ambiance and comfortable setting.

Don't Waste your Time and Money. We decided to try something different so I purchased a Living Social coupon for Oliver Twist and immediately made reservations for a table of 4 to eat there with friends. I even changed my dinner time to accommodate the restaurant as they asked if I could push it out a half-hour. When we arrived and mentioned our reservation, the Host had a 'quiet' conversation with the Hostess ignoring us as we stood there. Apparently, he had just been approached by another party who wanted more seats. After a few minutes, we were finally acknowledged and the hostess shows us to a 'platform' she called a couch and told us that his is all she has even though there were other tables open. When questioning the accommodations, she made some empty excuse and told us that the 4 of us can eat our dinner on this nice(?) 'platform couch'. I asked about the open table, which I believe was originally ours, and was advised, "Oh no, you have the 'couch'". I questioned why I wasn't informed earlier when I made reservations for a TABLE and she responded with an indignant indifferent attitude. The 4 of us walked out and right over to Margaux's who accommodated us even though they were completely full. We had a fantastic dinner with super service at Margaux's and it turned the 'dinner from hell' into a wonderful evening with friends. Do yourself a favor, if you're looking for a nice evening don't waste your time and money at OT and go directly to Margaux's. If I could change the 1 star for Oliver Twist to 0 star, I would! I have already submitted my request to Living Social for a full refund for my Oliver Twist coupon.

Do not recommend!. And one star is being generous. After a subpar first visit I gave this place a second chance because of the atmosphere and unfortunately the second visit was just as bad as the first! Everything here is overpriced. Marketing this restaurant as "fine dining" is a joke. It is mostly a tapas menu with prices averaging around $10-for tapas! I tried the pot stickers, which tasted like they came straight out of a freezer and right into a deep fryer. The hummus was bland and such a small portion for $10. And our flatbread pizza came out cold! I also order a martini since I was told that's what they're known for, but alas, for $10-11 dollars it was subpar and just tasted a little off. I asked our waitress what type of liquor they used and after consulting with the bar I was told it was Aristocrat-in an $11 martini! What a joke! And to top it all off, we came in with a coupon specifically for this restaurant, and had to argue with the manager (who was outside most of the time we were there drinking and smoking cigarettes!) just to honor it!! Needless to say the atmosphere is not worth eating here!

Timing is everything... This place always runs out of tables.. that is because they have about 8 tables, a few couches, and a bar area.

I love their tapas and martinis but cannot convince anyone to go eat there with me because there's always a wait, some huge reception or party, exceptionally loud music or some other distraction.

Why can't they just be a good, cool, funky restaurant and hangout? It's too much. Plus last time their air conditioning was barely functioning... ugh. Maybe if I went in the fall and sat outside. Otherwise I probably won't be back.

The martinis are exceptionally excellent!!. We ate here after seeing a late afternoon movie and were favorably impressed and glad we more or less happened upon it. My dining companion enjoys a well-made martini and though hers was very good and she loved her scallops tapas dish. It was hard to select a desert because each of the 5 or so offered seemed to be a fine offering (we wound up sharing the rum cake desert which we both enjoyed). Oliver Twist would be a very good place to dine with others because the atmosphere is relaxed yet classier than going to a casual place. Maybe capitalizing the R in Oliver Twist, e.g., OliveR Twist would help to emphasize the martini specialization of this restaurant, since that's not the most obvious thing when you first look at the name on the sign and you think of an English pub or something similar.
