Greasy and limp for a New York Style.
Pros: GREAT location for NCSU students
Cons: the so-called New York Style pizza, Bathrooms are a nightmare
Silvia's pizza by all measures is a New York style pizza wannabe with average to low quality ingredients making all but the most intoxicated patrons discouraged. The meats are chewy and overly fatty making the thin crust soggy well before it can be consumed. The vegetables are chopped by someone that obviously has their mind on other things.. .some minced, but some (like green peppers) that need to be cut before eaten.
Far and away the worst aspect is the very low quality mozzarella. I'm not at all sure where it comes from, most likely from a high volume manufacturer in plastic bags, as it has a distinct chemical aftertaste.
The peripheral aspect to Silvia's that is icing on the "pile" is the disgusting bathrooms. I realize it is a 'college eatery', but for goodness sakes, they can at least check on their restrooms a couple times a day and make it tolerable to those that must sit. No soap or paper towels.
And has been mentioned the parking is basically non-existent.
Please understand I don't want to insult the college patronage, but Hillsborough Street is about the only place Silvia's can survive being so close to the dorms it has virtually a free and easy clientele.
no comment on the food, but..... haven't actually gotten to eat there - I WAS meeting my daughter there after she finished shopping- but when she went to put some purchases in the car before going in to get a table, the car - actually MY CAR which was on loan to her, was TOWED!! Apparently there is a predatory towing company stalks the area - and I would not be surprised if he got kickbacks from them!! He "kindly"rescinded the towing fee when my daughter told him she WAS planning on eating there- what a guy! had to We just had to drive to a location( name of the business given to us not found by Garmin gps- because it was listed as an older or different business name - and was actually located BEHIND seemingly DEFUNCT construction co. office!
Great food, wonderful people..
I've never had bad service here, although it can be slow... but he cooks many of the things when you order them. The food here is amazing. The chicken penne pasta is my favorite dish, although the calzones, pizza, lasagna, and stuffed shells are amazing. His salads are some of the best on hillsborough street, but easy to miss if you don't look for them.
He always takes some time to chit chat with me a little when he's not busy, and he is very generous and kind. The presentation here isn't four star, and if you're looking for a place to take your prom date, this isn't it... but the food is better here than at many places you might take your prom date. Nothing is rushed here, so don't come here looking to get served in 5 minutes flat (albiet the pizza slices are a little faster than the other things). He takes his time with his food, and it shows. The menu is immense, and I haven't had anything there yet that I didn't absolutely love.
Why go here?.
I used to like this place, but, as of late, they've been going down-hill. So much so, that I'll never go back. There are simply too many wonderful alternatives around State's campus to be troubled with disgruntled staff, long waits, no seating, and occasionally cold pizza.
The second-to-last time I went there, they completely forgot to put my slices in the oven. And, yeah, I know --- mistakes happen. But, when I told them what happened, Sylvia himself through two slices in the oven for less than a minute, and then put them in my hands as I asked him for my money back. Then he just turned and walked away. So, not wanting to cause a scene, I ate as much of the luke-warm pizza as I could stomach before running to class.... and gave them one more chance. And, like clock-work... they once again completely lost my order (to be fair, they did have the good sense to heat it completely the second time around).
Still, I'll never go back. I can understand the occasionaly disgruntled employee, but a callous owner is more than I can take. That, and well, why eat there when you have to fight for a seat and eat some of the lesser pizza within blocks.
too much grease.
I ate here, pizza had way too much grease, service was ok, staff was not very friendly.
Biff
Topper in Toppings!!. Sylvias has a great variety of toppings in pizzas...add to that friendly ambience and prompt service... the owner is a very friendly & attentive person... for non-vegs u have the regular pepperoni... the barbeque chicken topping is defi worth a try... for the veggies ... do try the eggplant speciality or the pineapple. Also is spacious unlike the NY pizza next to it which is too crammed
