Really good mexican food for the price – Definitely not a fancy place but I have always been pleased with their cleanliness, their prompt service, and their very good food for the price. Especially good food for lunches. I do recommend it.
Terrible – I used to eat at El Meson after it first opened, when they used good quality ingredients, the food tasted fresh and was a great value. I moved away for a few years and tried it again after moving back to the area, and it has gone way down hill. First, my husband and I entered the restaurant after the lunch crowd had left so it was not busy. Yet there were many empty tables that still had not been cleaned off yet. Someone eventually greeted us and sat us down at one of the clean tables. They finally got around to cleaning off some of the tables by the time we were ready to leave.
We ordered a couple of combos. The food was just poor and bland. Most importantly the refried beans did not taste right at all, in fact, they tasted just like cigarette ashes. After this we just lost our appetites and asked for the check. We mentioned the beans to the manager, who just acted as though she didn't believe us and asked if we wanted to order something else, I think not! I'm surprised this place is still in business.
A definite departure from the rest – Great food great place! It's a joke that mexican restaurants use the same menu. They have a better menu with house specialities. Try the chicken with chorizo enchilada, or the "enchiladas camarones". (Three medium sized shrimp enchiladas). Generous servings on huge oval plates.
They added a second dining room and the decor is typical. The are packed for lunch. The only negative is that because of location, they don't draw much dinner traffic, therefore the nice bar is poorly stocked. They have beer but no wine and only a very limited liquor shelf. Still a great place to take the kids or go on a date to have a private, quiet booth.
Service is fine, our philosophy is you get back what you put in and we wind up laughing and joking with the staff. Last visit we had 2 waiters giving us everything we needed. Ask for David (Da-veed).
Good food, nice place, booyalicious salsa – I've been going to El Meson since it first opened. The service is a bit up and down but if you're nice to your server they're always nice back This isn't a 4-star restaraunt so you aren't likely to get someone to slide your chair in behind you.
I recommend experimenting out of the traditional "combo" meals which are only par, to try the Sincronaizadas or other especials. The food is good and the warm chips and salsa are excellent! Todo bien.
Old faithful – We moved to Morrisville after leaving CA and were quite pleased to find this restaurant. We now live in North Raleigh and although we have found other suitable Mexican eateries we always make a point to go to El Meson when we are in the neighborhood. Additionally, after one meal there my co-workers have dubbed it "Old Faithful" for the good food and service. Nice establishment, nice people.
Excellent Mexican cuisine!!! – What a delightful restaurant! We are always greeted with smiles and made to feel very welcome. The food is served piping hot and the homemade salsa is excellent (wish I had the recipe). The staff is very customer oriented and attentive. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal at El Meson. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Food Good, Service Bad, Frank Thirsty – This used to be a favorite restaurant of my coworkers and I. The food is good, the price is ok, and the ambiance is relatively appealing : but the SERVICE SUCKS! No way around it. No checking on the table at all. Almost bare minimum service. This appears to be only since they expanded their dining area to another whole room. Their staff is visibly non-chalant in their waiting on tables now. Its as if they were screwed in the process, and now their passing it on to their clients. I wish their service would improve greatly ; as until someone tells me it has I will not step foot in this restaurant again.
I've been a regular here since they opened in early 2001 and loved it - until the past 3 months. The service is now poor. You have to beg your servers for a single refill of your drink or salsa/chips or to comment on what you think of the food. Getting your check is also a challenge. If you try to tell the cashier about how poor the service is, she doesn't care either - she just wants the money. If this place can go back to the way it was before I would recommend it, but for now... STAY AWAY. This place is now just for crackers who can put up with poor service.
A must, I am a regula..love it. – Everyone in the Triangle area needs to give this place a visit. The ambience is great, staff is attentive. I am a regular, love the salsa and the cheese dip, the chicken quesadillas are to die for. All the paintings, crafts and furniture are from Mexico. It has enspired us to do something similar in our home decor.
Good Salsa Equals Good Experience – I happen to be a big salsa connoisseur. If the salsa is bad, then I'm probably not going to give the place much of a chance. Having moved to Cary in the past 6 months, I've tried every place around and have been very disappointed. But...finally...I've found a Mexican restaurant that has made the cut!
El Meson does have the best salsa I've found in Cary/Raleigh. Plus, it has a great atmosphere and it even has an outdoor patio. The food is great, and the price is right.
But, most importantly, the salsa rocks. Not quite the caliber of La Fiesta in Burlington/Greensboro, but a close 2nd in my book.
